COMMON EFFECTS

There are many types of effects to chose from.  Most current synths come with effects already built into the unit.  Common effects include reverb, delay, chorus, and distortion.

POST PROCESSING

Once a loop is saved as a wav file, the data can still be altered.  Such alterations are called post-processing.  The effects above can all be applied during post processing.  Often, a track is mastered, which involves, among other things, normalizing the volume values so there as loud as possible and don't clip, and adding other things that count as post-processing.  Also, many more bizarre things can be done with post-processing.  The most common bizarre alterations that I do involve sonic decimation, distortion, and bit reduction.  The following files are example files that have one or more of these effects.

Filters

A filter is a form of processing which cuts out certain frequencies of a sound and amplifies others.  There are four main kinds: low pass filters, high pass filters, band pass filters, and band reject filters.  An easy way to understand this is when the word "pass" is used, that means that only certain frequencies are allowed to pass through.  Low pass filters only allow sounds which pass below a certain frequency threshold set by the filter.  Band pass filters only allow a band of frequencies to pass.  Band reject filters don't allow a specific threshold to pass.  "Band" refers to a minimum and maximum threshold of frequency set by the filter.  Band reject filters are useful for eliminating clicks, pops, or white noise if the frequency can be isolated.  Band pass filters can be used to lift the vocals from a recorded song.

Vocoders

Vocoders are commonly used only for vocals.  They are in fact capable of much more.  Below are some examples of drums etc. pushed through a vocoder.  Of course, vocals are still the most fun so I included some examples of those as well.
