Basically in the end, Bruce Masterton (who I will talk about later) came to Vanderbilt from the Duke group, working with Diamond. Bruce came to some very nice conclusions about the role of auditory cortex in localizing sound. Earlier, Diamond and Neff came to conclusions about the role of auditory cortex necessary to pick out tunes - distinguish one from another. They actually used patterns of tones. So Woolsey and Rose were the two big guns at the University of Wisconsin, and I will come back to them.

I have to go back and say, when Diamond was trying to figure out if their lesions were complete. One way that you would say your lesions were complete, was to ask “did the correct parts of the thalamus degenerate from the lesions?”  So he took the brain sections at the University of Chicago, took them up to the University of Wisconsin and talked to Rose, and said “look at these sections and tell me if the lesions are correct or not”, and Rose looked at the sections and said “Do you want me to be kind or tell you the truth?”. Diamond wrote that in a little story about himself. And the truth was, he said, “these are the worst sections I’ve ever seen”  - and you should really learn how to do good sections. At the University of Wisconsin they had trained people to do wonderful sections. They have a tremendous brain collection there with all these sections. That collection has now been moved to Walter Reed Army Hospital in Bethesda, MD, but it is a tremendous resource.

This quotation caught me while I was reading it a few days ago, a little bit by surprise because when I wrote my first paper, the first draft of a paper for Diamond, and he read it, and I said how did you like it, he said “Do you want me to be kind or tell you the truth”. I thought that was very original of him [laughter]. One of the things you do when you are in science is copy from others - things that work for them and copy from them.  Oh and just another point, Rose chained smoked all day long. When he moved to University of Wisconsin and it became the best laboratory in the world for auditory physiology, mainly recording from auditory nerves, the experiments would go on all night long and into the next day, and he would just smoke the whole time, and the computer tapes were covered with ashes, everybody was complaining, they couldn’t convince him not to do this.
