• VISUAL WORKING MEMORY VISUAL WORKING MEMORY Our lab has recently started investigating the maintenance of precise visual information in early visual areas and the role that working memory plays in this process.
  • PERCEPTUAL FILLING IN PERCEPTUAL FILLING IN How does the visual system fill in blind spots or gaps in vision? Our lab has used fMRI and behavioral techniques to suggest that perceptual filling-in occurs actively in early visual areas, such as V1.
  • DECODING ORIENTATION AND MOTION DECODING ORIENTATION AND MOTION The Tong Lab has developed novel methods to decode orientation and motion information by analyzing fMRI activity patterns in the visual cortex. Through pattern analysis, coarse-scale fMRI signals can be analyzed to detect information stored at fine spatial scales in the brain.
  • COMPLEX OBJECT PERCEPTION COMPLEX OBJECT PERCEPTION How are faces and complex objects analyzed and represented in the human brain? Do these representations change as they ascend the visual hierarchy?
  • BINOCULAR RIVALRY AND VISUAL AWARENESS BINOCULAR RIVALRY AND VISUAL AWARENESS Our lab has used the techniques of binocular rivalry coupled with fMRI to examine the neural basis of visual awareness. These techniques have helped our lab to elucidate several of the functional regions dedicated to complex object processing.
  • MECHANISMS OF VISUAL ATTENTION MECHANISMS OF VISUAL ATTENTION We are actively investigating how top-down attention can alter visual processing in early visual areas. Our lab is specifically investigating how voluntary attention can accentuate specific visual features.
