So, the column hypothesis has been fortified from all kinds of places, but the original evidence for it is completely unsubstantiated – and so another thing wrong.

We said there are some columns in there, so you have neurons that are slowly adapting or rapidly adapting to touch, and so you have groups of neurons that can be mapped out and subdivided by very dense recordings, and you will have a little island of tissue that is all rapidly adapting, and another island that will be slowly adapting. So there is evidence for a kind of columnar organization, and some people replicated at least parts of this.
