Now, the person that wasn’t at Duke that had a big impact on me at that time and on other people was Walle Nauta.  Walle Nauta had become the supreme neuroanatomist of the universe! One reason he had great impact was because he was dissatisfied with the way people could determine connections in the brain, so he decided to do something about it, and developed a silver stain that stained degenerating fibers after making a lesion in order to show where the fibers go. And this was called the Nauta stain (Nauta method).

Some people said that this was so important in understanding brain organization and they referred to it as the Nauta revolution and he made a revolution in our understanding of brain organization by introducing this method. It was refined several times, and ultimately replaced with other methods. He came to Duke while I was a student there and he talked to Diamond and he talked to the Department and gave a talk because he was interested in leaving Walter Reed, where Ford (Ebner) had worked with him (Nauta NeuroTree). – I’ll get back to that – and he wanted to go to a Psychology department somewhere because he wanted to deal with issues that psychologists knew were important. And the most amazing thing happened and that was that my advisor, Diamond, invited me to go to the faculty meeting where they were discussing whether they should hire Nauta or not. No student that I know of has gone to a faculty meeting before or ever since. No one threw me out, and I’m amazed at that – they let me sit there. One of the great lesions I’ve learned is that everybody has their vested interests – most people didn’t want someone in anatomy to come into the department – they didn’t care how great he was or anything like that – they were No, No, No. Diamond was crestfallen over this. But it was a lesson to me that you don’t always get your way – I found that the hard way too. You don’t always get your way in the department. Now, what did this mean? Well, Nauta just went up to MIT which had a psychology department – they said FINE, you’ll fit in well here – wonderful place to be. And, he produced.     Next Page
