A novel Illusory Contour Stimulus

Lillian Gu, Barbara Dillenburger, Anna W. Roe

Our stimulus consists of a series of five 50 msec frames. Each frame consists of six oblique inducers of randomized length and position. These inducing lines are displaced in two sections that are vertically separated. This display induces a pure IC in the gap between the two dynamic abutting line sections.

Note: the framerate of the shown stimuli will vary with your browser and system.

Additionally shown here is an example with orthogonal abutting lines, which are known to generally induce stronger illusory contours than oblique lines.

Small horizontal displacements of the abutting line sections lead to a perceptually strong tilt of the pure IC.
