| Research Overview Our research group focuses on the genetic and molecular regulation of retinal function in health and disease The retina is part of the central nervous system and is subject to the same structural limitations and age-related degenerations affecting the brain and spinal chord. The laboratory has developed several novel tools for studying how gene expression contributes to the physiological function of the neuronal circuits that underlie early visual processing. These same tools are also applied to comparative studies of neuronal and glial cell function in age-related degenerative diseases of the retina. The laboratory is part of the Catalyst for a Cure consortium to study the fundamental mechanisms of retinal and optic nerve degenerative in glaucoma, which afflicts some 70 million people worldwide (www.glaucoma.org). *** Post-doctoral Position Available*** A post-doctoral position is available in the laboratory to work with basic scientists and clinician-scientists studying how extracellular signals modulate glial-neuronal interactions in degenerative diseases of the retina. The successful candidate will apply molecular, cellular and histological tools and should have demonstrated expertise in some aspect of cellular neurobiology. The candidate must also demonstrate a commitment to basic research, excellent communication skills, and a desire to learn novel techniques. This position also will provide ample opportunity for collaboration within the Catalyst for a Cure consortium. http://www.glaucoma.org/research/CFC/cfc_latest.html. Please forward your CV and the names of three references to David Calkins. |
