This course surveys classic papers in different areas of visual science and evaluates how those areas have evolved since publication of those papers. The following areas of visual science will be covered: visual neurophysiology, brain imaging, color vision, binocular vision, spatial vision, motion perception, attention, visual memory and visual cognition. During each week of the course we will read and discuss several seminal papers that provided the foundation (theoretical and/or technical) for later developments in the field under study. Throughout the course, individual participants will be responsible for researching a particular area, identifying exemplary contemporary papers and leading a classroom discussion the current status of the area. All those attending, whether enrolled or not, are expected to read the papers and participate in discussions. Final grade will be based on a midterm exam (take-home), class participation (that means “talking”) and on the classroom presentation.
