The Brain versus The Mind
The brain is thought to be a separate part working independently of the body, but both are dependent of each other. The body is the main section, but the brain is needed for the body to operate. The brain is a system of connections, all working together for the body function. The brain, however, is not only for practical life-supporting purposes, but also is the center for the mind. The mind, defined as the place for emotions, intelligence, and behavior, is the "soul" for the body. The brain seems to be more practical, and serves as the living unit for a human, and the mind as the personality of the human. The brain is connected to the body and the mind connected with behavior. The brain with the body serves as the functional part of a human, but the mind controls behavior and is the person.
The brain is related to the body, because it is the motor area for survival. Everything we do, is transferred from the brain by signals that are sent to the body for a response. The brain is a concrete organ, which can be seen, held, and dissected for examination. The brain is real; it is a system connected to the body. Both are dependent upon each other. Antonio Damasio states, "the body and brain form an indissociable organism. The organism constituted by the brain-body partnership interacts with the environment as an ensemble, the interaction being of neither the body nor the brain alone"(88). Both interact for a human being to be conscious and animate.
The brain and mind are also linked with each other, but the mind is directly related to behavior. The mind is in the brain, but it is the emotional, intellectual, personality, and spirit of a person. It is an abstract concept. The mind controls behavior. It shapes a person. The more intimate side of a person is due to the mind. A person is able to walk and talk due to the brain, but how he talks is due to the mind. For example, a person can be brain dead, but have no soul. The entirety of a person is both the brain and mind. The mind makes a person an individual and unique.
When I think of the mind, I think of something less concrete and more abstract. A mind cannot be touched, but it is what everything of composed of. The brain can be seen and touched, but the mind is more intangible. The word mind is even used in a theoretical sense in statements, such as "I am going out of my mind, a mind is a terrible thing to waste, single-minded, etc." No one says, "I am going of out my brain", because it is not common. The brain has a purposeful association to it, a functional relationship to the body.
The mind perceives the environment around, whereas the brain interacts with the environment. "When we see, or hear, or touch or taste or smell, body proper and brain participate in the interaction with the environment" (224). The mind perceives the environment around, whereas the brain interacts with the environment. Behavior is the mind, our actions are thought with the mind, while our heart beating, an involuntary action, is by way of the brain. The functions of life are by the brain, but how that life is lead is with the mind.
